What is emotional time traveling?
Did you ever notice a moment where you were straying into a past memory? And did you notice how you could really revive that moment in your entire body and mind? Feelings and past emotions suddenly start to emerge. Happiness, anger, sadness, … Just as if it happened 5 seconds ago. Or maybe you sometimes worry about the future and how things will go. Well, in these moments, we are experiencing an emotional time travel.
Emotional time traveling is when people are focussing on a previous situation that happened in the past or a self-created vision or situation that they think that will happen in the future. In those moments we can really recall or create emotions that occurred in the past or that could arise in the future. And as I mentioned in my previous blog ‘Are You Attracting Negative Energy Into Your Life’: What we focus on is what we create in our daily life. So it all depends on whether you focus on the good or bad memories from your past and whether you focus on a good outcome or a bad one in your future. That which you focus will determine your current emotional state. At least, when you allow it.
Emotional Time Traveling Excercise (Past)
I want you first to close your eyes and bring yourself back to a bad memory in your past. Look around who’s there, what the vibe is, where you are standing, how you feel, how your posture is,… and stay there for one minute. After that, you focus your thoughts back on the present and be aware of your current emotional state. How do you feel?
After this exercise, you just do the same. But this time you focus on a good memory from your past. Again you look around who’s there, what the vibe is, where you are standing, how you feel, how your posture is,… and also stay here for one minute. After that, you focus your thoughts back on the present and be aware of your current emotional state. How do you feel right now?
Did you notice how easy it was to create your own emotional state of being just by recalling a past bad or good memory?
What Happens When You Focus On the Past?
There are two ways on how you can focus on the past. You either focus on good memories or you focus on the bad ones. And this might sound very obvious, but when you are focussing on a bad memory from the past, guess how you will feel? Bad of course! However when you focus on a good memory of your past, then you will obviously feel good. It’s really that ‘simple’!
When Could Traveling To The Past Become A Problem?
Often, a lot of people are more focused on some point in the past or some point in the future instead of focussing on the here and now. This could become a problem when people keep on focussing on the bad memories of their past. Because then they run the risk of ending up in a vicious circle of negative energy. This is because they do not focus on attracting any good energy into their lives. Remember the law of attraction! You attract what you send out. Besides that, if you keep on focussing on the bad things from past, on top of that this can cause fear and worries for your future.
Besides focussing on the bad things from the past, there could also arise a SMALL problem when you focus too strongly on the good memories from your past. Overall, focussing on the good, should not be a problem. But when the focus on the good of your past is starting to give you a bad feeling about the present, that is when it does become a problem. Because you can’t keep on living in the good memories from your past. Don’t get too attached to those. You have to focus on making the present as beautiful as possible.
Emotional Time Traveling Excercise (Future)
I want you to close your eyes and focus on an upcoming event, meeting, situation or action point that you will face in your near future. Something that you don’t look up to, that makes you anxious or makes you feel insecure. Or at least how you picture it to be. Look around who’s there, what the vibe is, where you are standing, how you feel, how your posture is,… and stay there for one minute. After that, you focus your thoughts back on the present and be aware of your current emotional state. How do you feel?
After this exercise, you just do the same. But this time you focus on an exciting goal, event, meeting, action point that you will experience in the future. How you feel like it will be. Again you look around who’s there, what the vibe is, where you are standing, how you feel, how your posture is,… and also stay here for one minute. After that, you focus your thoughts back on the present and be aware of your current emotional state. How do you feel right now?
Did you notice how easy it was to create your own emotional state of being simply by visualizing how your future will go in your mind?
What happens when you focus on the future
There are also two ways on how you can focus on the future. You either focus on your fears towards the future. Or you focus on excitement towards the future. And just like focussing on the past, when you focus on fear (bad) you will feel anxious and scared. And when you focus on the excitement, you will feel joy and happiness.
When Could Traveling To The Future Become A Problem?
When you are only focussing on the future this could totally disconnect you with the present. Whether it is watching with fear or excitement. Both can become an obsession in some way. Of course, living in fear towards your future is the worst. Usually, we live in fear of our future because we are still focussing too much on the bad things that happened in our past. So in this case, we are not only focussing on our future in a bad way but also on our past. Probably in an unconscious way. I don’t think that I even need to explain how bad this can make you feel. Every day, waking up with a anxiety of what might happen. This is really something that we need to let go of. We can’t change what happened to us in the past, and we can’t predict or control what will happen to us in the future. So there is no point in holding on to this fear. We can only control how we feel right now. And out of self-love, we should really let go of those negative emotions that do not even serve us at all.
Just as good memories can cause problems in some way, excitement can do this as well. When you are too obsessively focussing on your future excitement, then you can become
disconnected from your present. It’s good to be excited and happy about your future. But you should not never lose touch with what is in front of you right now.
Try to be as present as possible. It’s a good thing to sometimes remember those beautiful moments of your past or to be excited about your future. But don’t get too obsessed about it. And also try to let go of the negative memories and fears since they are not serving you in any positive way. Be grateful with the here and now, and embrace every moment you have.
